There is always a tremendous amount of work and preparation involved in organizing an event such as the derby. This year was no exception. One of the main issues each year is dealing with schedule conflicts at our club, city events, holidays, Newport/Ensenada Race, LB Grand Prix and even fishing tournaments at other clubs. So when the weather acted up during the days preceding the Saturday/Sunday event it became even more difficult to predict. We determined that although the rain and wind on Thursday & Friday may have hampered the quality of fishing due to water temps and clarity, there was no reason not to hold the event as scheduled. There were no small craft advisories forecasted for Saturday or Sunday and none transpired. The weather was actually nice for the duration of both days.

Saturday began with mild conditions with sunshine and a light puff of wind. 30 plus anglers hit the water with high hopes and the anticipation of capturing the “big one”. Anglers went several directions including Catalina, local waters to the south and west; inshore and in deeper offshore. The radio was mostly quiet with reports of the occasional “Radio Fish” that never materializes. The scales opened at 1:30PM on Saturday with the first boats to report in shortly there after. The team of four anglers led by Barry Lloyd fishing on the vessel “Penny Jean” reported in weighed in the first halibut of the day caught by angler Keith Klein that weighed 11 lbs. 13 ounces and measured 31 inches long. Several more halibut were presented at the scales but didn’t meet the tournament length and therefore didn’t qualify. Not long after, the vessel “Salt Shaker” whose owner Tim Kyleberg is a Shoreline Marina tenant came to the weigh-in dock with several large sand bass. Because there was only one qualifying position for the bass category, angler Bill Leasher of the Salt Shaker presented a large bass that weighed in at 4 lbs. 1 ounce. The anglers of the “Salt Shaker” released all of the fish after being weighed. The scales closed around 3:30PM with no more reports of incoming fish. Assisting on Saturday was my wife Beverly Anderson and Victoria Stevens. Beverly was also the official photographer, coordinator, events planner.

Sunday dawned with calm winds and calm seas although the air was a little cool. That flat conditions made for a great morning on the water as the anglers of SYC headed out for day 2 of the 9th Annual SYC Halibut Derby. The Anglers Committee staged the equipment for the day and after a great brunch and relaxing morning a on the deck at SYC prepared for the day. Rumors quickly spread of the “Big One” that had been caught. Anticipation abounded rapidly and spread like wild fire of this great fish. Calls on the radio by other anglers resulted in some intimidation by the big fish that they would have to beat. Team Salt Shaker of “O” Dock returned to the weigh-in dock Sunday with more bass to be weighed. This time Team Captain Tim Kyleberg presented a large sand bass that weighed in at a whopping 5 lbs. 4 ounces to knock his team mate, Bill Leasher off the bass leader board. The fish was released after being quickly weighed. Then the “Big One” showed up at the scales. SYC Angler Fred Johring, owner and team captain of the “Picante” presented a halibut that was 38 inches long and weighed 18 lbs. 1 ounce. Team “Picante” now owned the leader board knocking Team “Penny Jean” back to 2nd place. And just as the scales were closing, the SYC Team “Tuna Time” led by Howard and Pat Lund presented a 29 ½ inch halibut caught by angler Stein Cozad that weighed 10 lbs. 1 ounce that locked up the last of all three places for the halibut category. |

Awards and prizes were presented at the club later in the afternoon after everyone had a chance to relax and get refreshments. Commodore Eric Peterson assisted me with the presentation of awards and prizes. Taking 3rd place was Stein Cozad who won a Shimano Reel and other great prizes. The 2nd place winner Keith Klein took home a Penn Baja Special Reel, a Lamiglass Rod, Tempress Product’s Fish-On Rod Holders, Sea Tow Captains Membership and assorted tackle. 1st place winner Fred Johring took home a prize package valued at $2,000.00 that included a artist edition of Guy Harvey’s “Oasis in the Blue” artwork valued in excess of $600.00. This prize was designated for the largest halibut caught by a SYC Club Member. Fred also won a Penn International Reel valued at more than $629.00, Sea Tow Captains membership, an ICOM VHF hand held radio, a pair of custom sunglasses from Serengeti, Re-Structure Marine care products, Izorline Fishing Line and hooks from Eagle Claw and Mustad. In the bass category, Tim Kyleberg won a great prize package that included a Fenwick Graphite fishing rod, Abu-Garcia Ambassador fishing reel, a Guy Harvey Print titled “A Tribute to Calicos”, Izorline fishing line, Re-structure Marine Care Products and Tempress Product’s Fish-On Rod Holders. Following the presentation of prizes and awards we held a raffle in which over $500.00 in prizes were given away, with enough prizes that allowed everyone to win including Chris Lonjers who won a Lamiglass Fishing Rod valued at $119.00. Also given away were products from Re-Structure Marine, Izorline International, Eagle Claw, Tempress Product’s Fish-On Rod Holders, Guy Harvey Studios and Mustad Hooks. Everyone also received a free complimentary 60 Day membership from Sea Tow. Sea Tow also provided free local on the water towing for any angler who had entered in the derby for both days of the event. There were several large teams from SYC who had fun just spending time with friends even though they didn’t get the big one. If I could give a good sportsman award, Team Spot would have won. They know who they are. They didn’t catch the right stuff, but they sure had fun trying! Thanks to all who participated. Those who didn’t missed another great event with nice weather as predicted with no small craft advisories, no rain until late Sunday and lots of great prizes. Be sure to visit our supporters and sponsors products next time you shop for tackle, boat care and other items. If it wasn’t for them we would not be able to put on such a great event. It was also a great way for us to show off our club to potential new members with several in attendance Sunday afternoon who had seen our club from the outside, but had never been inside. They were impressed.

The Annual Anglers Seminar Certified Observer Program of the International Game Fish Association IGFA-certified Observers are put aboard participating boats, to confirm species and ensure rules compliance, thus allowing for the live release of captured fish. This COP class covered species identification, IGFA saltwater fishing rules and regulations, safety at sea and boating etiquette. |
